RESIDENTIAL - Start, Stop & Transfer Service

Applying for residential service

​

To meet with one of our Customer Service Representatives in person, please make an appointment by clicking HERE or calling 256-552-1400 Opt. 4.  However, you may also start, stop or transfer service over the phone at 256-552-1400 Opt. 4 or by email csr@decaturutilities.com M-F, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

To apply for service with DU, you will need to bring:

 

  • A photo ID such as valid driver’s license, non-driver’s photo ID or an identification card issued by a state or federal government entity.

  • A second form of ID such as Social Security Card, Medicaid or Medicare card, certified birth certificate or original government or payroll check.

  • Your purchase contract, warranty deed or settlement statement if a homeowner.

  • A copy of your lease (with address) in the name of the person applying for service and the owner/landlord’s name if renting.

  • Funds for the applicable deposit.

Residential Deposit Schedule

​

  • Electric - Deposit Amount: $135

    • Average Electric Bill: $136.98

  • Natural Gas - Deposit Amount: $35

    • Average Natural Gas Bill: $35.84

  • Water - Deposit Amount: $20

    • Average Water Bill: $22.19

  • Wastewater - Deposit Amount: $40

    • Average Wastewater Bill: $38.54​

  • TOTAL IF RECEIVING ALL FOUR SERVICES: $230

    • Average Bill for All Services: $233.55

Residential deposits may be waived with a favorable credit report rating obtained by DU. Residential deposits will be refunded after five years of good payment record with no collection activity and no more than one late payment – or upon termination of service.

 

Garbage Pickup & Recycling

​

DU serves as the billing agent for the City of Decatur’s Department of Street and Environmental Services. If you have questions regarding GARBAGE PICKUP, please call them directly at 256-341-4740. For questions regarding RECYCLING, please call 256-341-4770.

 

Transferring Residential Service

​

Our customers who have a good payment record and five years of service at one location may transfer service to another DU location by calling (256) 552-1400 Opt. 4. A 24-hour notice is required. Customers with a good payment record but less than 5 years of service will need to come to our main office to transfer service. Deposit amount will be determined at that time.

 

 

Terminating Residential Service

​

If you are moving out of Decatur Utilities’ service area, you may call us to cancel your service. A 24-hour notice is required. DU will verify account information before processing your phone request. If you paid a deposit that has not already been refunded, it will be applied to your final bill and any balance remaining will be mailed to your forwarding address. All credits are refunded in the form of a check.
