Summer Energy Efficiency
-
Set your air conditioner thermostat at 78ºF for maximum efficiency.
-
Set your ceiling fan to turn counter-clockwise to create a cooling wind-chill effect.
-
Close window blinds during the day; open them at night.
-
Operate appliances at night when possible.
-
Set your water heater to 120ºF. Also, insulating it can help.
-
Turn off any electronics when not in use.
-
Wash and dry full loads only.
-
Replace HVAC filters on a monthly basis. Have your HVAC unit serviced regularly.
-
Look for cracks or gaps around windows and doors. Seal them with weatherstripping or caulk.
-
Replace single-pane windows with double-pane OR install storm windows.
-
Have a certified HVAC technician inspect your home's duct work for leaks.
Winter Energy Efficiency
-
Set your heating system thermostat to 68ºF for maximum efficiency.
-
Bump it down to 56 - 60ºF when you leave for an extended period of time.
-
Take advantage of solar energy! Open curtains on your south-facing windows during winter days to allow free heat into your home. Close window coverings after the sun goes down to avoid losing that heat!
-
REVERSE your ceiling fan and make sure it is rotating in a clockwise direction to push warm air down.
-
Check your insulation levels. If you can see the ceiling joists in your attic, chances are you don't have enough insulation. 12 inches is a good rule of thumb.
