ELECTRICITY

Decatur Utilities is a customer of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), which provides electricity to utilities throughout our region. We have some of the most competitive utility rates in the country and one of the lowest electric rates of any TVA distributor. Our electric rates are primarily based on the cost established by TVA. Approximately 90 cents of every dollar DU collects for electricity is paid to TVA to purchase electricity. View our FAQs page for the answers to some of our most asked questions about our electricity services.

Outdoor Security Lighting
Decatur Utilities is pleased to offer dusk to dawn lighting for homes and businesses at a low cost that provides light for safety and security. The light, controlled by a photocell, turns on at sunset and off at sunrise.

Decatur Utilities offers a range of high-pressure sodium light fixtures that will meet your needs based on the size of the area where you are trying to enhance lighting levels. Installation of a light can be accomplished by two methods: 1) A light fixture can be installed on an existing Decatur Utilities pole or 2) A new pole can be installed (pending access for a utility truck) and a light fixture placed on the new pole. The new poles are wooden and are available in 30, 35 or 40-foot heights. Either installation method requires a two-year lease contract stating that you will keep the light and pole for the duration of the contract by paying the monthly fee. The fee covers the cost of the light, pole and kilowatt-hours used each month and shows up as a line item on your monthly utility bill.

See the rate schedule below for the cost of the different lighting options. Please contact our office at 552-1440 and we will be happy to discuss the options and cost associated with each one. The standard security light requested by most customers is a 100 watt High-Pressure Sodium light and monthly charges are approximately $8.29.

Decatur Utilities will maintain the security light. If the light fails to work properly, contact us and a service technician will make repairs at no cost to you.
