Application for new utility service can be completed at our Main Office at 1002 Central Parkway SW.
Please bring the following items when applying for service:
A $125 deposit for residential service may be waived with a favorable credit report rating (obtained by DU). Deposit can be reduced to $50 with an acceptable letter of reference from your previous utility company within the previous 12 months and for at least a 12-month period. Your deposit will be refunded after 5 years of good payment record (no collection activity and no more than 1 late payment per year) or upon termination of service.
Utilities will be turned on the next business day. For further information or if you are unable to come into our main office to apply, please contact a Customer Service Representative at (256) 552-1400.
Transferring Residential Service
Our customers who have a good payment record and five years of service at one location may transfer service to another DU location by calling (256) 552-1400. A 24-hour notice is required. Customers with a good payment record but less than 5 years of service will need to come to our main office to transfer service. Deposit amount will be determined at that time (no greater than $125).
Terminating Residential Service
If you are moving out of Decatur Utilities’ service area, you may call us to cancel your service. A 24-hour notice is required. DU will verify account information before processing your phone request. If you paid a deposit that has not already been refunded, it will be applied to your final bill and any balance remaining will be mailed to your forwarding address. All credits are refunded in the form of a check.

Commercial account deposits are determined by the usage for the location. Please call us prior to your arrival for exact deposit amount. Deposits are refunded upon termination of the service and payment of the final bill.

Construction Information
![]() Temporary Power
This generally consists of Decatur Utilities providing service to a temporary pole (provided by the customer) and setting an electric meter. The deposit for this service is $200.
Put up and take down of temporary service is $40 and is billed to the account. If the put up and take down involves a Decatur Utilities temporary transformer, the cost billed to the account is $370.
Construction Power
Our Engineers calculate the deposit for construction power. Please call Customer Service at (256) 552-1400 with the construction location for exact deposit amount.
Tapping Fees
Water meters greater than 1” and wastewater taps for additional or alternate service vary in price, so contact our office for more information.
