DU employees "Get on the Bus" and see the impact

of local non-profit agencies supported by United Way.

As someone who works in human resources and employee relations, one of my great joys is watching employees grow both in their professional and personal lives. Recently, Decatur Utilities participated in the United Way’s “Get on the Bus” tour and gave our employees the opportunity to visit several non-profit agencies and programs in the Decatur-Morgan County area.


I was delighted that more than 20 of our employees took advantage of this chance to see first-hand where their donations to United Way wind up and the impact that their support is making on lives here in the community we call home.


We had a cross section of personnel attend – management, administration, customer service, wastewater, water, electric and gas. Some of those who went are already giving to United Way through payroll deduction. Others were considering signing up – and wanted to learn more about the agencies.


What struck me the most was the impact that the tours had on our people. I talked with several employees after their tour and they simply could not believe what they had seen.


Some visited the Morgan County Child Advocacy Center and learned how the Center is serving children who are in abusive situations. Others saw how Hospice of the Valley ministers to families with loved ones in the final stages of life. Still others met the staff at Habitat for Humanity, an organization that builds affordable housing for the economically disadvantaged. This list goes on…


Our employees saw that these agencies are touching people at every age and across all socio-economic levels. In fact, one out of every three Morgan County residents was impacted by one of these agencies or programs last year – more than 32,000 people in all.


One of the comments made was, “I didn’t realize that my donation made a difference.” What a profound statement. The truth is – every donation makes a difference. Just $5 a week can deliver three months of meals for a “Meals on Wheels” client or provide life-saving medicine for someone without insurance.


DU’s employees left the tour changed for the better – and they saw that when we UN1TE as one, the results can be incredible.
