DU recognizes Public Power, Natural Gas and Customer Service Weeks


This week marks Public Power Week, Public Natural Gas Week and Customer Service Week across the U.S. Here at home, Decatur Utilities is proud to be the public, municipal-owned utility provider for residents of Decatur. 


Public utilities offer lower rates and are governed by a local board of directors that works with the utility's management to make decisions in the best interest of the customer. Also, locally-owned utilities like DU love to give back to the community - as evidenced by The DU Community Crew and our support of United Way, Dragon Boat Race and Festival, Relay for Life and many other local non-profits and community service efforts.


DU’s Electric Department serves about 26,500 customers and has the second lowest residential rate among TVA’s 155 distributors. Our system reliability was 99.995% for 2016.  DU’s linemen actively participate in local safety demonstrations for elementary school children and other groups.


DU’s Natural Gas Department serves about 13,600 customers across 400 miles of main line. DU is very active in helping promote 811 Alabama OneCall, pipeline awareness and natural gas safety.


Our payment reps processed more than 123,000 payments last year and customer reps saw almost 14,000 walk-in customers with an average wait time of just 5.3 minutes – in additional to 69,331 phone calls!
