AWPCA Recognizes DU Plants for Excellence

Water, Wastewater Plants receive "Best Operated Plant" Awards for third straight year

Decatur Utilities was recognized at the 2017  Alabama Water and Pollution Control Association Conference for excellence in operation at its Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP).  Plant Superintendents Hagler Wiley, WTP, and John Beard, WWTP, were on hand to receive the awards.

DU’s Dry Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant received the “Best Operated Plant Award” for Mechanical Plants Greater than 10 Million Gallons per Day (MGD). The award is presented in recognition of outstanding operation achieved by the operators of the plant during 2017 and marks the third year in a row the plant has received the honor. Because of this achievement, the plant received the "Three-Year Award". The WWTP will not be eligible for the award until 2019. In addition, the WWTP received the Alabama Water Environment Association 2016 Excellence Award for Domestic Plants Greater than 10 MGD.

DU’s Water Treatment Plant received the “Best Operated Plant Award” for Distribution Systems with 25,001 – 50,000 meters and the “Award of Excellence” for Surface Water – Greater than 60 MGD. Both awards recognize the outstanding level of operation achieved by operators of the plant during 2017. As with the WWTP, this was the third-straight year the WTP has won the Best Operated Award. The plant received the AWPCA "Three-Year" Award as well, meaning it also will not be eligible for a Best Operated Award until 2019.

Water Resources Manager Tom Cleveland credited Wiley and Beard for the management of the plants and the operators, electricians, maintenance mechanics, engineers and other support personnel who work 24/7/365 to keep DU’s plants operating reliably and efficiently.

“Safe drinking water and the proper treatment of wastewater are vital to the health and wellbeing of our customers,” Cleveland said. "These men and women are dedicated to operating plants that meet or exceed all state and federal regulations.  It is truly a team effort."

General Manager Ray Hardin echoed Cleveland’s sentiments, adding that these 2017 awards, and those received in previous years, reflect DU’s mission to provide safe, reliable utility services at the lowest possible rate and meet the needs of customers and employees. “We don’t make that statement lightly,” Hardin said. “I am extremely proud of the teams at our water and wastewater treatment plants and happy that their efforts for quality have been recognized."
